I've heard all kinds of crazy home remedies over the years to try to curb this phenomenon, such as sticking your tongue out while you are chopping (which was really more annoying than the tears!), or lighting a candle, but I realized recently that if you simply refrigerate your onion until it is cold to the touch, very little tears occur once you start cutting! I also recently read on ehow.com that wearing kitchen goggles (did anyone know there was such a thing?) does the trick, as it prevents the onion vapors from irritating your eyes. I haven't tried this last method, but I think I should...for research purposes...OKAY because I want some kitchen goggles!
Wrapping it Up
That's all for this blog entry! I'd like to know what your tear-free, onion chopping remedies are. Perhaps together we can extinguish teary-eyed cooking!

I've heard that when you start getting teared up to open freezer and put your face up to it. I have done it and it does work. I think the goggles are a better idea instead of having to go back and forth to the freezer!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great tip! Thanks for sharing; I'll have to try that next time!
